    Promotions: Corporal on 1 January 1863
    (date of promotion erroneously listed as 1 July 1863 by wife on pension application. His military record lists his date of promotion as stated, 1 JAN 1863).
    Company muster roll states that from period Mar & April 1863, "Stop $3.00 sentence Court Marshal."

    Wounded/Sick: Regimental Return for July 1863 lists Corporal Jelley as "Absent" and under remarks it states, "Wounded July 1, 63."
    Casualty Sheet for John H. Jelley, Corporal, Company "H", 14th Regiment NYSM & 84th NYV lists him again as a casualty, "Wounded - unknown" at Laurel Hill, Va. on May 10, 1864."

    Taken Prisoner: Engaged in the First Battle of Bull Run, 21 July 1861 Listed on the Muster Roll as "MISSING" from the date 21 July 1861.

    "Captured at Leesburg Oct. 21 (This is an error and is further corrected to read, "Captured at Bull Run July 21) Confined at Richmond, Va. 28 July 1861, sent to New Orleans Sept. 25.
    (The obituary for Corporal John H. Jelley states he spent time in Libby Prison in Richmond, Virginia) Record goes on to read, "Admitted to St. Mark's Hospital, Richmond 1861."

    Paroled: at Salisbury, North Carolina on 28 May 1862.
    Record goes on to read, "Delivered to Genl. Burnside at Washington, NC (should be "DC" and not "NC" ?) on 28 September 1862.
    Carried again on the regimental rolls as, "Present" with the regiment from 31 August 1862.

    Marriage Date and Place: : 26 December 1865 at the home of the bride, 257 Court Street, Brooklyn at the Strong Church Baptist Church. Residence at 732 Quincy Street, Brooklyn, NY. They had 7 children 3 of whom were listed as "dead" and 4 listed as "living" as of 2 April 1915. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1915.
