Captain William L.B.Stears. Letter 2. First Request For Leave. Denied.
Arlington Sept 18th /61
To Brig. Genl. Keyes
The undersigned respectfully solicits a leave
of absence for seven days it being imperatively
necessary for His business interest that He should
return to his home.
The circumstances of His case are these
For five or six weeks prior to His departure for
the seat of war He was occupied in recruiting His
company at a great expense to Himself and to
the detriment of His business, He left His business
in charge of another party, said party being incompetent
to conduct it properly.
The lease on His place of business (a valuable one)
is about to expire and His presence is necessary to get
an extension of the same.
His credit as a business man and His honor is at
stake and He does not feel Himself comfortable
as an Officer with a bad name behind Him.
He hopes that as there is now no Officer of His
Regt on leave at present and his Lieutenants being
on duty with His Comp that His request will be granted.
The undersigned applied for leave of absence some
time ago but failed to obtain it.
Respectfully submitted
