The Deserters of The 14th Regt.
CAMP MARION, Jan 1, 1862
To the Editor of the Brooklyn Eagle:
The issue of your paper of the 28th inst. Containing
the list of deserted soldiers of the regiment is before me. I beg to call your attention
to the names of Wm. Blake and James Pugh, quoted therein. Both of these parties are now
here, the former lying at the Brigade hospital and not expected to live suffering from an
attack of brain fever. The later fulfilling his duties as becoming a soldier.
By giving this a place in your valuable paper you will
do but justice to the accused, and oblige yours,
N.E. Carlton
Corporal Co.E, 14th Regt. N.Y.S.M.

To the Editor of the Brooklyn Eagle:
Dear Sir:
In your paper of last Saturday we noticed a list of deserters from the Fourteenth
regiment of Brooklyn, among which was the name of J.C. Pugh of Bridge street. Now
this is a gross error and a shameful piece of injustice to an estimable young man, who
would scorn such an act; and although you are not in any manner to blame in this
matter, we know you will willingly give this note a place in your columns as a simple
act of justice.
On the breaking out of the rebellion, this young man left our employment and joined
the Fourteenth regiment, as he then supposed, for three or four months service, but was
subsequently sworn in for the war. On the 23rd Nov., the date of his alleged desertion,
he came home on a furlough, to visit his friends, and was detained a few days over his
time by a dangerous illness of one of one of his family.
He rejoined his regiment early in December at Camp Marion, Virginia, from which
place we have received two letters from him, the last dated 16th Dec. These are the
simple facts, true to our certain knowledge.
Very respectfully,
Parker Brooks & Co.,
