Patrick McManus

Born: 1831 Jamestown, County Leitrim, Ireland.

Immigrated: 1841 to New York (at 10 years of age).

Died: September 27, 1863 (32 years of age) in Brooklyn, NY due to complications from a gunshot wound to the left lung.

Description:

Height: 5 foot, 7 1/2 inches.

Description:
Dark Complexion.
Blue Eyes.
Brown Hair.

Enlisted: April 18, 1861 (30 years of age) at Brooklyn, NY by Capt. William L.B. Stears to serve 3 years.

Mustered In: May 1861 as private, in Company E.

Discharged: December 8, 1862 at Camp Parole, Virginia.
Result of a gunshot wound to the left lung.
With dyspnea. One third disability.

Wounded: First Bull Run, July 21, 1861.

On July 27, 1861, Captain William Stears of Company E wrote a letter to Patrick's brother, Terence McManus,(SEE BELOW), who was still living in Brooklyn.
Terrence enlisted the following winter, March 8, 1862 (32 years of age).

Captured: July 21, 1861 at First Bull Run.
Admitted to a hospital in Charlottesville, Virginia on July 24, 1861.
Sent to prison in Richmond, Virginia September 1861, having sufficiently recovered from wound.

Paroled: June 2, 1862.
Sent to Washington, D.C. Sept 1862.
Discharged: Dec 8, 1862 from Camp Parole, Annapolis, Maryland.
Sent home to Brooklyn, New York.

May 18, 1863 files for disability: Stating "that since his discharge from the service he has worked thirteen and a half days at his trade, as a painter but was unable to work any longer at said trade or any other occupation in consequence of the injury caused by wound (gunshot) and confinement. On September 27, 1863 he dies.

Married: December 10, 1855 (24 years of age) to Margret Anne Brown at Assumption Church, Brooklyn, NY by Pastor William Keegan.
Margret McManus died October 27, 1870.

Children:
Charles Joseph McManus born Dec 1, 1859. Orphaned in 1870.
Charles Joseph becomes temporary ward of his uncle Terence McManus (formerly of Co E. 14th Brooklyn).
In 1871 Charles moved to live permanently with another uncle, Frances E. McManus in Brownsville, Texas. He married Elise Gussett of Corpus Christi, Texas about 1895 and had numerous children.


  • Patrick is buried in Calvary Cemetery, Long Island City, NY, Section 3, Range 18, Plot P, Grave 4.
