A letter written by Private Kollmyer to the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, defending himself against the claims
that he was a deserter:
The Deserters of the 14th Regiment
To the Editor of the Brooklyn Eagle:
- Sir,
- Seeing my name published amongst the list of deserters in your Saturday's evening
- edition, I wish to contradict that segment, as I have been confined to my bed with a
- sever attack of sickness since my return to Brooklyn, and am still under my doctor's
- care. As soon as my health permits, I will return to resume my duties amongst the
- defenders of our country's flag. By inserting this in your valuable paper, you will
- greatly oblige.
J.H. Kollmyer, 14th Regiment
Obituary
James H. Kollmyer
James H. Kollmyer, a veteran of the Civil War, died at his home, 488 Sixteenth street, on Wednesday. Mr. Kollmyer was born in the City of New York nearly seventy years ago, but moved to Brooklyn when a boy, his parents then residing on Nassau street, in the Fourth Ward. At the breaking out of the war, he enlisted in the Fourteenth Regiment and in one of the earlier battles received wounds from which he never fully recovered. The Kollmyer family was well known in the older section of Brooklyn. Mr. Kollmyer leaves a widow, a son and a daughter. Funeral services will be held at his late home on Friday evening, and the interment will be in the family plot in Greenwood, on Saturday morning.
We wish to thank the GG Granddaughter of James for providing the copy of his portrait.
