City County and
State of New York} ss: John Coleman, being duly sworn, says:
That he felt the
trouble with his limbs first, about two weeks or thereabouts, prior to his capture. He rejoined his
regiment about November 2, 1863, at Bristow Station, Va.
He was captured at what he always supposed to be the battle of Bull Run, about
August 28, 1862. He remained in captivity about three weeks. He was then paroled and forwarded
to Camp Parol, Md., where he remained four months. Then, being a non-combatant, on account of
his parole, he was furloughed and sent home. He was then suffering with his illness and could not
endure much walking. He therefore wrote his Captain ( Elcock ) saying that he was unable to return
to the regiment and Elcock replied that he had better wait until he should be able to return to duty,
and then report Camp Distribution at Alexandria, Va., which he did about August, 1863. There he
remained for about three months reporting every two or three days to the surgeons. Finally, about
November, 1863, he was deemed well enough to be returned to his regiment, which he reached as
stated about November 2, 1863.
