An Article from the Brooklyn Daily Eagle in September 1862, conveying the subject of a
letter written by Private John Moody, Company A, regarding the death of Private Henry Van Brunt:
A Letter From Mr. John Moody, of Co. A, 14th Regiment N.Y.S.M., dated from
"Near the Potomac, Md., Sept. 21" conveys the melancholy intelligence that Mr.
Henry Van Brunt of that company was killed in the battle of the 17th, two miles
from Sharpsburg. He received a ball through the head and another through the
thigh. His comrades buried him with military honors. The deceased was a most
promising young man; but twenty-six years of age, and had only been on to the
regiment three weeks. He was a brother of Ald. Jas. Van Brunt of the 8th Ward,
who with members of the family have our sympathy under their bereavement.
